Genealogy Database Update – May 18th, 2025

This update brings a major expansion of the genealogy database, with over 250 new individuals, hundreds of new records and media items, and broader geographic coverage. It includes detailed additions from San Cassiano di Controne and Palleggio, Montefegatesi, and Pieve di Controne, dozens of WWI and WWII profiles, cemetery documentation, and new family connections drawn from civil, church, and military records. Highlights include:

  • 253 new individuals added, primarily from San Cassiano di Controne, with additional families from Palleggio (notably Piccinini and Buchetti).
    • 25 of these are WWI and WWII casualties from San Cassiano di Controne, representing service in Italy, Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States. Their names were drawn from the local war memorial and international archives (e.g., Red Cross Historical Archives, Aarolsen Archives, Ancestry.com, MyHeritage).
    • Newly added people from San Cassiano (1734–1990) include surnames such as: Mariani, Talenti, Fabbri, Giannini, Barsellotti, Bastiani, Bilieni, Santini, Nicolai, Martini, Lucchesi, Persiani, Caselli, Girolami, Nieri, Bernardi, Landi, Barsetti, Barsanti, and others.
  • 100+ new geographic locations added, extending from Palleggio and Boveglio in Bagni di Lucca to Sussex, England, and from Ombreglio, Brancoli in Lucca to Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
  • 172 cemetery entries from San Cassiano di Controne have been added—linked to existing profiles or representing new individuals. These entries are now accessible directly through the cemetery register and individual database profiles.
  • 100+ new family units created through newly discovered individuals and marriage records.
  • 200 new source entries integrated, including:
    • Civil records (birth, death, marriage and marriage banns)
    • Church records (select baptisms from 1887)
    • Parish household registers (from 1811)
    • WWI and WWII military records
    • Concentration camp and prisoner of war records
    • Cemetery headstones
    • Newspaper articles and obituaries from Canada and the United States
  • 300+ new media files, including:
    • Photographs of headstones, including profile photos
    • Scanned documents from military archives (WWI & WWII)
    • Scans and microfilms of original sources
