Militari Caduti nella Guerra 1915-1918: A unique register of Italian men who lost their lives during WWI. Here, we can find a persons’ regiment, date and location of birth, and the date and location of death, including the cause of death. On this page, we find Giuseppe Bastiani (1884-1918), Francesco Bastiani (1898-1918), Adolfo Bastiani (1898-1917), and Orazio Bastiani (1894-1918) from Bagni di Lucca and San Cassiano, specifically.

Civil records: Civil records of births, marriages, and deaths contain useful information about those who served and had previously served in the military. Here, Ghilardo Fabbri (ca. 1833-1866) is noted as ‘ex militare’ at the time of his death in November 1866. Without clues like this, we would not know who served in various military conflicts.

Military lists and enrolment cards: At the time of WWI, young men across the United States enrolled to help the Allied forces. Among these were men from San Cassiano. Here is the military record of Astolfo Bastiani, who was born in Cappella, San Cassiano in 1892. Astolfo enrolled in the fall of 1917 in New York, and died in Bronx County, New York in 1968. The record shows his deployment and time of honorary discharge in 1918.
